Emergency during a rental

Accident, breakdown, theft or damage during your rental: here is what to do, in order. Get people to safety before anything else.

1. Make people and the location safe

Move clear of traffic, switch off the ignition, put the hazard lights on if the vehicle has them and make yourself visible. Do not stay on the carriageway. If anyone is injured, that comes before the vehicle and before calling ID Location.

2. Call the emergency services when the situation requires it

In Switzerland: 144 for medical emergencies, 117 for the police, 118 for the fire service, 112 as the European emergency number. Call the police when someone is injured, a third party is involved, the facts are disputed, something was stolen or damaged, or the law requires it.

3. Tell ID Location

Contact us as soon as you are safe, by WhatsApp or by phone. Give the exact location, the time, the state of the vehicle, whether anyone is injured and whether the police attended. Do not wait until the end of the rental to report an incident.

4. Document it without putting yourself at risk

When it is safe, photograph the vehicle, the damage, its position, the signage and the surroundings. Note the time. These help with the report and with handling the file. Never step back onto a live carriageway to take a photograph.

5. Take third-party and witness details

Take the name, phone number, registration, vehicle and insurer of anyone involved, and the contact details of any witnesses. If the police attend, ask for the case reference. Exchange only what the report requires.

6. Do not ride if the vehicle is unsafe

Brakes, steering, lights, tyres, a leak or a detached part: if there is any doubt, leave the vehicle and call us. We agree the next step together. No repair is to be ordered without our agreement, except in a strict safety emergency.

Theft or vandalism

Report it to the police and keep the case reference, then tell ID Location immediately. Do not leave the keys or documents at the scene and do not attempt a risky search. Tell us where and when the vehicle was last parked.
